Iit-kanpur Clinches 3rd Consecutive Stem Impact Award For Tech Transfer | Kanpur News

Kanpur: Adding yet another feather to its cap, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) was honoured with the coveted STEM Impact Awards during the annual STEM Summit of 2024, hosted in Bengaluru.
Recognised for its pioneering technology transfer endeavours, IIT Kanpur secured the accolade for the third consecutive time, underscoring its unwavering commitment to innovation and societal progress.
The STEM (Society for Technology Management) Summit, a platform fostering technology transfer processes and nurturing technology management professionals across various disciplines, honoured IIT Kanpur for its groundbreaking contribution to socio-economic advancement. The institution’s achievement stems from its successful technology transfer of the ‘Haptic Smart Watch for Blind and Visually Impaired’.
Professor Ankush Sharma, spearheading the Start-up Incubation and Innovation Centre at IIT Kanpur, along with Professor Siddhartha Panda from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Coordinator of the National Centre of Flexible Electronics (NCFlexE), jointly accepted the prestigious award from Alwin Wong, chairman of the Association of Technology Transfer Professional.
Expressing his pride and gratitude, Professor S Ganesh, director of IIT Kanpur, said, “IIT-K remains steadfast in its mission to develop innovative solutions that address societal needs. This recognition reaffirms our dedication to excellence and underscores the expanding landscape of research and development at our institute. I extend my congratulations to Professor Siddhartha Panda and the entire team involved in the groundbreaking development of the Haptic Smart Watch for Blind and Visually Impaired.”
The Haptic Smart Watch, conceived in 2022 by Professor Siddhartha Panda and Vishwaraj Srivastava from NCFlexE, stands as a testament to IIT Kanpur’s commitment to accessible technology. This cost-effective wearable device features a touch-sensitive tactile interface that relays information through vibrations, offering a discreet alternative to traditional audio-based output devices. Licensed to Ambrane India Private Limited for mass production and distribution, this invention has also been honored with the prestigious Best Assisted Technology Initiatives by Educational Institutes’ Award at the ATF (Assistive Technology Foundation) Awards 2023.
Professor Ankush Sharma, at the helm of the Technology Transfer Cell under the Start-up Incubation & Innovation Centre, hailed the development of the ‘Haptic Smart Watch for Blind & Visually Impaired’ as a remarkable milestone for the IP & Technology Transfer Team. Following their record-breaking achievement of filing 122 IPRs in 2023, this invention underscores IIT-K’s commitment to fostering collaboration with industry partners and driving societal impact.
