How are we currently benefiting from artificial intelligence (AI)? What is the trajectory of our relationship with AI? What do we have to look forward to? What might we do to support our interactions with AI?

Beginning April 16, Third Age Learning Lakehead (TALL) will host Artificial Intelligence: Applications & Implications, a five-part lecture series that will seek to answer these questions. From exploring the blending of human ingenuity and the potential of AI, to Cold War 2.0, to AI in healthcare, to navigating digital threats and misinformation, participants will engage in a journey of learning, emerging better prepared for the inevitable integration of AI into our daily lives.

The office of community engagement and lifelong learning at Lakehead University along with the TALL committee are thrilled to present this series, marking over 100 lectures delivered to date. This milestone is a testament to the high level of engagement and commitment to learning in our communities.

The series will open with Kelly Parke, a distinguished academic and media professional with expertise in innovation, creativity, and technology, playing a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of business leaders. He will launch the series with the goal to discover how to navigate uncertainty with confidence and turn challenges into opportunities by evolving with technology.

George Takach, author and geopolitical analyst, will explain the AI dynamics that tie wars together and the role AI will play in the outcomes of world struggles with connections to Canada and the current American administration. His book, Cold War 2.0: Artificial Intelligence in the New Battle Between China, Russia and America, will be for sale after his talk on April 23. (Cash only, please.)

The following week, we will hear from local cybercrime leader Vern Crowley, recently retired from the Ontario Provincial Police’s Cybercrime Investigations Team (CIT) and cyber security business owner (ONREVX). Vern will discuss current cybercrime trends along with prevention and response practices.

On May 7, Dr. Carolyn McGregor, dean of the faculty of business and IT at Ontario Tech University, will share some of her research in the area of AI connected to healthcare. She applies her pioneering research in her international award-winning Artemis and Athena AI platforms for health, wellness, resilience and adaptation in critical care, astronaut health, firefighter training and tactical officer resilience assessment and development.

The series will close on May 14 with Miranda McKee, PhD candidate in the communication and culture joint program at York and Toronto Metropolitan universities, researcher, educator, and curator. This lecture will explore the challenges raised by visual misinformation circulating online, AI’s contribution to the problem, and the importance of developing visual and media literacy skills to critically evaluate what we encounter online.

Join TALL to celebrate 100-plus lectures on Wednesday mornings to listen, share, and learn more about the world of artificial intelligence, what it has to offer us, and how we can best interact with AI. The series will continue to be delivered in a hybrid format, allowing those who are unable to attend due to circumstance or geography to join those who are in person at St. Paul’s Centre in this remarkable learning community. More information, including how to register, can be found at www.lakeheadu.ca/tal. Single lecture tickets are $20, plus HST, and whole series tickets are $75, plus HST.
