Upcoming Tesla app feature lets you visually identify service issues in advance

In an upcoming over-the-air (OTA) software update to its fleet, Tesla (TSLA) is deploying a new feature that allows Tesla owners to identify vehicle service issues in advance.

A Tesla owner posted a few screenshots of the Tesla mobile app on Reddit (NYSE: RDDT). This user might be an early access tester or an internal company employee.

This upcoming feature will be handy for notifying your Tesla service center about technical and cosmetic issues well in advance of the appointment. On the service side, Tesla staff will have a chance to identify the issues and prepare for the fix/repair before the vehicle comes in.

The leaked screenshots above suggest that the Tesla mobile app loads a render of the Tesla vehicle that the owner needs a service for. Before making the appointment, Tesla asks the owner to identify the issues specific to an area or part of the car (highlighted with white dots).

As we can see, you can tap a white dot to identify an issue or highlight a damaged exterior part. For example, the front bumper has four dots that ask for issues/damages/replacement information for the bumper, diffuser, and both fog & parking lights on the sides.

The front view also has highlighted spots for the frunk (front trunk) and both headlights.

Like the front, the Tesla app loads both side profile views, the top view, and the rear view to identify issues and damages. Interestingly, a highlight point is also visible on the tire/wheel.

Although this enhanced service feature is poised to come in a near-future software update, some Reddit users reported that they have experienced similar features from time to time.

For example, a Tesla owner said that he saw a similar interface when he needed tire replacement on his Tesla vehicle. Another user said that he saw a similar view when he needed to claim Tesal Insurance for his car.

So, it’s an interesting upcoming feature with some parts of it already being in the Tesla app but haven’t been that well-known. It’s not clear from the original post on Reddit which exact version of the Tesla app this feature will start to roll out.
